Enabling the biological light ecosystem.

EducationNetworkingCollaborative research

Living cells give off a light far too faint to see. It comes from chemical reactions, mostly oxidation, and a single-photon detector counts it one photon at a time. PhosNexus is a non-profit institute for biophotonics and bioelectromagnetics, now being founded in Prague. It will connect the people who study, measure and teach this light.

01 · What we do

Three lines of work, one shared goal: a field that others can check.

These are our plans for the first years, starting in 2027. Each line feeds the others. Joint measurements become teaching material, and teaching brings new people into the network.

01

Education

Open courses, lessons and materials for students and teachers, from single-photon detectors to the oxidative chemistry behind the light. A portable photon-counting kit will bring live measurements to schools, science festivals and the International Day of Light on 16 May.

02

Networking

We will connect the laboratories and teachers who work with biological light, starting with the Biophotoniq Network: shared protocols, meetings, training and interlaboratory comparisons.

03

Collaborative research

Research done together and in the open. The Biophoton Signal Atlas will be an open database of ultraweak photon emission and chemiluminescence signals, with reference measurements and data that follow the FAIR principles.

02 · Principles

What the institute stands on.

These principles come from our founding deed, not only from this page.

Measurable phenomena only

We do not spread claims that measurement does not support, and we make no health claims. The word “biophoton” attracts a lot of those.

Open methods and data

We publish our methods, protocols and reference data openly, so that anyone can reuse and test them.

Equal access

Our results are available to everyone on the same published terms. No one connected to the institute gets preferential access.

Non-profit

Any surplus goes back into the purpose. The institute has no owners and no shares.

03 · About

A legal home for an open field.

The name joins Greek phōs, light, and Latin nexus, connection.

PhosNexus is being set up as a legal body: a non-profit legal person under Czech law. Once registered, it can receive grants, employ people, look after shared data and sign agreements with schools and partners.

The Biophotoniq Network is an informal collaboration of laboratories, with no legal person of its own. PhosNexus will act for it where a legal body is needed, but its work goes beyond the network. Its results and services are open to everyone on the same published terms, members of the network or not.

Legal form
Registered institute (zapsaný ústav) under Czech law
Seat
Prague, Czech Republic
Status
In formation. We plan to file for registration in November 2026.
Director
Michal Cifra, founder and first director
Biophotoniq Network
An informal collaboration that PhosNexus works with. It is not part of the institute, and the institute is not limited to it.
Governance
A director and an administrative board of three members. A scientific council advises; it is not a governing body.
